Experts' Panel about US-Iran Relations; challenges and prospects

Dr. Mohammad Jamshidi

Thought US-Iran conflict isn't a new problem it has gone through different phases. Even though changes in the security environment of the region and global geo-strategic balance have affected the formation of US-Iran conflict, we can safely assume that all the hostilities stem from the fact that the United States never recognized the Islamic Republic of Iran and have always tried to destroy the Islamic regime. Therefore, policies such as military action, attempts to overthrow the regime and sanctions against the nation are all means to achieve this strategic goal. During Trump's presidency, American top officials openly state this approach. Thus, we can conclude that US and Iran aren't just sternly against each other and their dialogues have reached the highest level of hostility. Tehran Foreign Policy Studies Quarterly had a panel with a number of university professors and experts of American issues in order to examine the prospects of US-Iran relations with regards to these conflicts. Interestingly, the scholars with different political orientations all conclude that American authorities have tried all the punitive policies against Iran and are not of the opinion that the policy of pressure has failed against the Islamic Republic of Iran's active resistance. It means that despite all the economic costs they imposed on Iranian nation, the US couldn't in the end create a gap between the ruling system and the revolutionary people to serve its policies; neither could they destabilize the Islamic Republic of Iran's willpower to defend its essential interests. The panel also searched for answers to some other questions as well: how have America's goals and interests gone through transformations during Trump? What are Iran's real interests and the proper ways to achieve them under current circumstances? What are the most important scenarios about US-Iran relations?
